The EEC has called many places of the Mediterranean "Sites of Community Interest" (SCI) [28] , for environmental importance. The Italian Republic has proposed on the basis of the Decree of 25 March 2005 , published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic n. 157 8 July 2005 and prepared by the Ministry of the Environment , the list of these SIC within the Region Puglia , identifying 77 nominations. Among these, the largest part concerns the province of Lecce with 32 well-SIC. In the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto have identified 8 for each SIC.
The coasts of Salento
The coasts are wide and sandy especially on the Ionian Sea, whose waters are characterized by a transparency at this latitude and rare colors; are the spectacular cliffs overlooking the sea, above the Adriatic Sea. Among the best known beaches are sandy ones of Ugento , Pulsano , Lizzano , Campomarino , San Pietro in Bevagna , Bear Tower , Porto Cesareo , Gallipoli , Santa Maria di Leuca , Otranto and Ostuni , and as for the rocky beaches, among the most notable quote deserve Castro , Santa Cesarea Terme navies of Nardo ( Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina ) and Porto Badisco .
The caves karst
The caves are open along the east coast, nestled in the steep cliffs that starting from Santa Maria di Leuca come to Capo d'Otranto (Otranto). These karst formations at Castro , are of substantial development, of which the Grotta Zinzulusa is the most significant example, and in which were found several pictograms and palaeontological findings, together with those of the nearby Grotta Romanelli are for Most kept and exhibited in the Museum of Maglie . Rich in karst caves is also the coast of marine Neretine (Nardo)
The olive groves
The expanses of olive trees in the countryside, were included in the 2007 list of 100 places to be saved by the Italian Environment Fund Italian [29] .

The oasis is one of the finest natural Salento, an ecosystem that is home to various species of animals and plants and are a "Special Protection Area" (SPA), proposed as a Site of Community Importance Committee (SCI). Among the major points of merit Oasis Lakes Alimini, is to report on the coast the Bay of the Turks .
The State Nature Reserve Torre Guaceto
The reserve covers about 1,200 has presented a sea front that extends for 8,000 m The area is configured as a rectangle more or less regular, with an average depth of 3,000 meters, crossed and divided by highway 379 . A significant variety of diverse backgrounds succeed in this coastal stretch for several hundred meters inland. Inside there are small wetlands that form during and after the rains and disappearing in the warmer periods, and some springs of fresh water they also seasonal.

The Park of Porto Selvaggio and Captain Marsh
The park, established in 2006 , includes the area of the park facilities (established in 1980 ) and the marsh (classified as a natural area in 1997 ).The coast is rocky and jagged, and characterized by pine woods and Mediterranean bush . Steeped in history and archeology, with many archaeological sites such as the Cave of the Horse, recently mentioned by major scientific journals because on the inside were found the remains of the first man in human history sapiens also along the coast are located the fascinating High Tower and Tower Uluzzo . It is a magical place, rich in flora and fauna.
L ' Isola di Sant'Andrea
The island, on the Ionian coast, stretching for about five acres and is just over a mile from the historic center of Gallipoli. It is completely flat, and its maximum height does not exceed three meters. This feature, which brings the island to be swept by the waves in case of strong winds, making it unsuitable to host a rich vegetation.

The swamp, on the shores of Mar Piccolo of Taranto, is a protected natural area of state property in naturalistic-environmental value. The environment is predominantly marsh with reeds and Mediterranean scrub , marshes and large areas periodically submerged.
The Park Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca and Tricase Forest
The park also includes the area where the lighthouse stands of Capo d'Otranto, the easternmost point of Italy. The establishment of the protected area, located along the east coast of Salento (high coast overlooking the sea), aims to preserve and recover the plant and animal species; protect the values and historical-architectural; increase the surface and improve the ecological function of natural environments.
The Park coastal dunes from Torre Canne Torre San Leonardo
The park, on the Adriatic coast, has habitats and coastal environments of high natural and scenic interest, and returned to the project " Habitat priority "established by Directive n. 92/43 / EEC. Presents a vegetation halophyte and numerous dunes covered with Mediterranean vegetation , especially junipers ( Juniperus oxycedrus and Juniperus phoenicea ), holm oaks and scrublands of Euphorbia spinosa .
